Understanding the New NFRC Condensation Index Rating

The new Condensation Index (CI) rating per ANSI/NFRC 500 is a computer simulation procedure that uses the coldest surface temperature of the frame, sash, or glass, which wadeveloped based on Canadas CSA A440.2/.3 physical test methodThis Condensation Index replaces the Condensation Resistance (CR) rating, which was solely a comparative product rating that did not correlate to other condensation rating values within the fenestration industry, such as the CSA A440 Temperature Index (TI).  CI ratings can be used to compare products and useful for determining the best product due to regional weather variations.

Through a computer simulation, the CI will allow the consumer, manufacturer, building owner, or architect to find the fenestration product that best reduces the potential for condensation based on where in the United States or Canada that the product is to be placed.

This presentation will introduce the new NFRC CI rating and how it can be functionally used by introducing a table of CI values versus dew point/relative humidity and winter design temperatures within the NFRC 501 Users Guide.

Presented by Dennis Anderson, NFRC Program Manager. Dennis has an engineering degree and has been in the fenestration industry for 27 years, having worked for Twin City Testing, Architectural Testing, UL, and NFRC during that time. While at UL, Dennis was the chair for the condensation task group that developed the new rating and vetted it with NFRC membership for approval. Now back as NFRC staff, Dennis is spearheading the efforts to get the CI rating implemented.
